Creating a Personal Seedbank

Rural Spin

You have probably heard of seed saving, where you save a plant’s seeds or tubers at the end of a growing season to serve as the seed source for the following year. This is great because choosing the proper plants and practicing proper seed-saving methods gives you to a free, self-perpetuating garden year after year. Saving seed also means you can share seeds with friends and neighbors, so everyone can start growing their own.

Many people, however, are not as familiar with the concept of a personal seedbank. A personal seedbank is like seed saving on steroids. You save seed for the coming season’s planting, but you also bank seed for longer storage, just in case.

What that “just in case” might be varies. Some people have created a personal seedbank as insurance against crop failures. Others believe a personal seedbank is necessary in the event of a partial (or…

The Power of Rites of Passage

angelfractical
Today, the importance associated with ritual rites of passage is on the decline. We often celebrate birthdays, weddings and other cultural occasions, but pay very little attention to the ways in which these events may mean more than simply an opportunity for festivity and drinking beer. Many of our cultural celebrations are in fact rites of passage, with a much deeper transformational meaning both symbolically and literally.

What is a rite of passage?

Rites of passage are often known as liminal spaces, that is, they usher an old state of being into a new state of being. The concept of liminality was first conceived of within the field of anthropology and was used to explain rites of passage which carried children into adulthood. In the Xhosa culture in South Africa, boys are ritually circumcised, after which they must live alone for several weeks in the wilderness. This rite is performed to signify the transition from boyhood to manhood.

However, rituals such as these are more than merely symbolic – they are considered to have real transformational power. The enactment of these rites doesn’t just represent your transition to a new state of being, but they actually and factually transform you. This idea was taken up in the field of psychology and is known as individuation.

Individuation process

Individuation refers to the process whereby a person becomes a psychologically separate unity or whole. For example, a baby starting to realize that it is not one and the same with its mother, but rather that it exists as a separate being. Therefore, whether one regards the liminal space as an important part of rites of passage on a collective anthropological level or individual psychological level, it performs the same function. The liminal space acts as a passage from a prior state of being into a new state of being. It is a space in which personality and agency can be shaped unrestricted by fixed ways of being.

How modern rites of passage have changed

Marriage is a rite of passage still practiced in most societies, but it is often reduced to a stressful box-ticking exercise that ends in a couple living together. This cannot be regarded as a rational reduction given the sky-rocketing divorce rates that we see today. The sentiment that true love does not need ceremonies seems to ignore the deeper wisdom that more ancient cultures afforded to liminal rites of passage.

The reason why we reduce the importance of rites of passage today is that we value objectively verifiable fact over subjective experiences. The transformational power of rites of passage is a subjective truth as it can only be verified through experience. A couple may report that their relationship feels different after the performance of a marriage ceremony, but this is not something that can be proven. Therefore, we tend to disregard it. Our “rational” approach to life runs the risk of ignoring the transformation potential of experience in liminal situations.

The idea that rites of passage can be truly transformational experiences may encourage us to look more deeply into the rituals we perform in our lives. We may be prompted to examine our actions and the meaning attached to them more carefully, rather than moving through these processes hollowly and without pause. So, the next time an important occasion is on the horizon, take some time to really feel it and the potential it has to change your life.

Just For Today … “Get a Life” ~ by Anna Quindlen

montage(5)
There are thousands of people out there with the same degree you have; when you get a job, there will be thousands of people doing what you want to do for a living. But you are the only person alive who has sole custody of your life. Your particular life. Your entire life. Not just your life at a desk, or your life on the bus, or in the car, or at the computer. Not just the life of your mind, but the life of your heart. Not just your bank account, but your soul.

People don’t talk about the soul very much anymore. It’s so much easier to write a résumé than to craft a spirit. But a résumé is cold comfort on a winter night, or when you’re sad, or broke, or lonely, or when you’ve gotten back the chest X ray and it doesn’t look so good, or when the doctor writes “prognosis, poor.”

You cannot be really first-rate at your work if your work is all you are.

So I suppose the best piece of advice I could give anyone is pretty simple: get a life. A real life, not a manic pursuit of the next promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house. Do you think you’d care so very much about those things if you developed an aneurysm one afternoon, or found a lump in your breast while in the shower?

Get a life in which you notice the smell of salt water pushing itself on a breeze over the dunes, a life in which you stop and watch how a red-tailed hawk circles over a pond and a stand of pines. Get a life in which you pay attention to the baby as she scowls with concentration when she tries to pick up a Cheerio with her thumb and first finger.

Turn off your cell phone. Turn off your regular phone, for that matter. Keep still. Be present.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure, it is work.

Get a life in which you are generous. Look around at the azaleas making fuchsia star bursts in spring; look at a full moon hanging silver in a black sky on a cold night. And realize that life is glorious, and that you have no business taking it for granted. Care so deeply about its goodness that you want to spread it around. Take the money you would have spent on beers in a bar and give it to charity. Work in a soup kitchen. Tutor a seventh-grader.

All of us want to do well. But if we do not do good, too, then doing well will never be enough.

Seeds For Meditation … Who Are You Listening To?

awesome-forest-natural-beautiful-hd-wallpapers-wallpaper-nature-beauty-dark-backgrounds-amazing-apartments-minneapolis-the-rainforest-pictures-awesome-126546048

Nothing can add more power to your life than concentrating all your energies on a limited set of targets.

Are you listening to your ‘false self’ or your ‘true self’?

Psychological research has found that you may be able to change significant features of your personality with conscious intent. In other words, meditation can help you strengthen the parts of yourself that have been lost.

Why do you meditate? Is it to be peaceful, joyful and happy? Is it to find the true self that has been obscured by your false self — those insecurities, fears, and feelings of uncertainty that build up over time? The only way to understand your true self is to begin the work of uncovering it. But first you must be able to distinguish between your false self and your true self.

When you are feeling secure, accepted, peaceful and certain, you are experiencing your true self. When you are overwhelmed by stress, crisis, doubts and insecurity, your false self has control. Today, use meditation to help find that peaceful and joyful person at your core. Relax, without judging or analyzing, and begin to see glimmers of your true self come shining through.

Happiness is not a reward, it is a consequence. Suffering is not a punishment, it is a result.

Numerology ~ This week’s energy vibe is 8 ” The Power of Infinity”

thoth
This week’s energy vibe the number 8 is one of the Power numbers!

Let’s look at the power behind this great number, Ruled by Saturn the planet that expects great things from you and will reward with the same 10 fold, the 8 relates to the cycles of time, as does Saturn known as Father time. The Greeks called it the number of justice because of its equal divisions of equally even numbers;(4 and 4), or (2 and 2, 2 and 2) this represents the solid and complete.

In the Christian symbolism it stands for afterlife, it is also known as the number of regeneration and of the Gods who accompanied Thoth. The number 8 believed to represent the joining of the two spheres of Heaven and Earth, this great number also has a dual nature as demonstrated by the one circle on top of each other, standing for the meaning of “what is above is equal to what is below” This number stands for justice and the punishment that is assigned to the crime. So let’s look at this in reference to the week ahead, how can we use the number 8 in our daily life and ask the question are we participating in the right action or are we going against our own true nature? Meditate on this most powerful number and envision the symbol of infinity, bring this power into your own reality and become the person you are meant to be “your true self”.

Planetary influences coinciding with the powerful energy vibe 8:

First Quarter Moon in Capricorn on October 1st brings a strong emphasis on the need for serious labor. Some staunch determination is required. There is a steadily mounting concern to achieve a notable level of accomplishment or completion of projects. The need to hunt for a steady job, a marketing edge, or a secure investment keeps us vigilant and focused. Punctuality in business matters is stressed. Some may feel isolated by constant work and no play. No one likes feeling rushed, particularly when high standards must be met. The gem stones assigned to the 8 are all Saturn ruled such as all dark stones, dull ruby, black pearl ,amethyst and black diamond.Light a black candle for releasing negative energies, meditate with Onyx to help increase awareness of visions and dreams, it emphasizes self-control and grounding, call in Archangels: Haniel, Raguel and Raziel for guidance and protection.

Your Dearest, your Brightly Shining One, is coming home once again.

At times you will see her there, in the twilight gleaming…

She is the First Star of the Night, your Evening Star, setting just after the Sun.

At other times, such as now, you will see her in the blush of a New Day…

She is your Morning Star, the Bringer of Light, the Keeper of your heart.

She is Prometheus, who brings to you the Fire of Love and Understanding,

She is the Herald of Spirit, who welcomes the Dawning of each New Day.

Whether Setting or Rising, Venus is the Avatar of your most Sacred Truth,

That in the end, the measure of any life that was, is or will be is quite simply,

Did you understand how it is done, did you live with, for and by Love?

Welcome Venus now as she returns to her most special realm. Today Venus comes home to bring you these Gifts of Spirit, to brighten and illumine your Shared Sacred Spaces where you will find, forge and share your love of one another.

One Half of your Journey of Love is about understanding that this is your True Nature. That the One True Force that binds together all of this Creation as One, this same Resonance also holds all that you are as one too…That in the Innermost of everything and so in the innermost of you there is a Spark of the Divine. Divine Love abides within you, and because of this you are and will always be Loved, because in your essence you are this Pure Love.

But the other half of your journey is to experience this same Divinity, to know this same Supernal Light of Love “out there”…You are here to know objectively what you already sense intuitively. You are here to leave behind doubt and fear, to move from darkness and into the Light. You are here to lift yourself and one another out of unawareness and into the Greater Awareness. You will come to experience outwardly through and with one another the fuller measure of this Divine Love, and you will know that this Love is the essential core of all that surrounds you. Most especially, most wonderfully and personally, you will find this Light and Love forms the essence of what you hold and have for one another too.

Hawaiian is magical in multidimensional ways, which is why I teach our students to wield their Mana through a Hawaiian lens.  With Japanese, Hawaiian is the only other language processed on the RIGHT side of the brain.  (Consider the implications there!)  That makes the sounds created by Japanese and Hawaiian words very special … and closest to the light languages of our star ancestors.  All reasons that our serious practitioners at The Halau focus their healing art around the Kotodama.  When you know how to work the energies, you donʻt need tools ʻcause you are THE tool!  All this is built into the Hawaiian language.  If you are interested in learning Hawaiian, contact me.   ~ Lana

Save The World With A Smile

elephant dog friends
No matter how much of a free thinker you are, it is impossible to escape the structures placed upon you through which you have come to know about the world.  The way in which society expects us to live is strongly influential and it powerfully impacts our idea of what constitutes as a “good” life. Cultural norms run deep, affecting our perceptions and choices in ways which we are often unaware.

Feeling the pressure of today’s society

Our societal milieu is outcomes and performance based. There is a constant pressure to be the best, to outdo your neighbor and to win at all costs. We are told that if we do not maintain this competitive edge we will fail at life. Therefore we strive to be the cleverest, the thinnest and the fastest. Consequently, we have become a society of manipulative and conniving beings. This way of being borders on the sociopath, as the only bottom line we look out for is ourselves, while treating everyone else as collateral damage.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S. affecting around 40 million adults. In 2012, an estimated 16 million adults had at least one major depressive episode within the year. Clearly we are not coping with the pressure and not only are we harming others in our quest to the best, we are also harming ourselves. Moreover, we are destroying the planet and all the natural resources we depend upon for survival. It isn’t difficult to see that this mind set is not serving us well. It doesn’t take a genius to look around and to see that that our “win at all costs” attitude is actively helping us to fail. So why do we continue to cling so tightly to it?

At the core of our nature, we are social creatures. Human beings have a deep need for acceptance and belonging, which is very difficult to overcome. Those who speak out against the evils of the world tend to be ostracized. This is one of the deepest human fears – rejection. So while we try to sculpt our lives to match our individuality as best we can, we still ultimately march to the beat of society’s drum, however faint.

So what’s the answer?

Awareness is always a good place to start. Take note the next time your hand feels forced or you feel ‘there is no other way’. What societal expectation is in play? You may not be able to change anything, but at least you are no longer an automaton or a sheep blindly following the flock. You are aware and as soon as you become aware, you start becoming more responsible. Maybe next time you’re faced with an impossible choice, you will identify room for compromise. Perhaps avenues you hadn’t considered will start to appear.

The truth, the real truth, worth repeating over and over again, is that all our decisions come down to a choice between love and fear. We fear being excluded so maybe the answer is to begin to include others. We fear rejection, so maybe we should focus instead on acceptance. We fear the fear itself, so maybe we should begin to practice compassion. This may not solve all our problems, but it reminds us that change happens one small step at a time. Never underestimate the power of a single smile or a small act of kindness. It is the only place to start.

Woman as Healer: Shamans, Midwives and Priestesses

silkscreened ladySince the beginning of human civilization women healers honored and observed the sacred cycles of nature, time, and spirit. Women healers served their communities through midwifery, spiritual healing, nutritional and herbal healing, massage, hands on healing, prayer, ritual, dance, song, music, toning, and dreaming. Wise women healers offered healing support for their communities through ceremony and nurturing care from birth to death, from “womb to tomb”.

The healing ways of women have been demonstrated in every culture around the globe by traditional women healers, herbalists, and midwives. Women have been practicing the arts of midwifery and healing for thousands of years. In earlier human culture, women healers were honored for their sacred feminine healing arts. In times of oppression, patriarchal religions have targeted women healers and midwives.

Women have always gathered together during times of hardship, illness, menstruation, and birthing. In traditional cultures around the globe, female healers are an integral part of the community, and arose out of the community of women, through gaining experience and respect. Traditional midwives learn their healing craft from elder women in the community, often a mother, grandmother, aunt, or neighbor, thus weaving a web of women’s wisdom that connects the community of women and holds together the whole tribe of men, women, and children.

The traditional female healer blends knowledge of herbs and midwifery with cultural and cosmological beliefs. The interweaving of art, science, and spirituality creates a holistic model of care that nurtures and empowers the body, mind, and spirit. There are women healers and midwives from every culture around the world. She is known as the village healer, priestess, herbalist, midwife, wise woman, or shaman. She is the South African sangoma, the Hispanic curandera, the South Asian dai and Dyamaju, the Mayan granny healer, the Appalachian granny midwife, the French sagefemme, the Japanese samba, and the Polish babka.

Midwifery is the healing art of being ‘with woman’ and healers of the sacred feminine are the true midwives. Women’s healing arts are founded upon a deep connection to nature and an honoring of the human body. Women’s sexuality is valued as a healing, empowering, vital, and integral power. It is time for all humans to awaken to the experience that we are co-creators of our life, reality, and universe. Each thought, feeling, action, intention, and prayer you make influences your world, your health, your body, your children, and your planet. We are all part of one world, one universal womb, one universal family, and each breath we take is a biodynamic interchange with the holographic matrix of living energy.

The time is now to spiral to the next stage of evolution, beyond procreation of humanity and nature vs. nurture. It is now the age of co-creation with nature, spirit, love, and consciousness for the birth of a new paradigm of healing, birthing, living, and learning.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPES by Beverley ~ Sept. 29-Oct. 5, 2014

purple rose bouquet
GENERAL PLANETARY INFLUENCES

I really enjoyed my holiday, a lovely break for me, but now back to normal with the Weekly Horoscopes. Overall, there is some positive movement planetary wise, but also a need to find ways of dealing appropriately with stress, and energy levels.

The Sun has now moved into charismatic, diplomatic, harmonious Libra on Monday, it can give us more of a balance, but also make us procrastinate at times.

The Moon starts the week in broadminded, humorous, optimistic Sagittarius, with a First Quarter Moon on Wednesday, helping us ascertain new goals. The Moon moves into aloof, pessimistic, responsible Capricorn. On Saturday it moves into impulsive, magnetic, imperative Aquarius, finishing the week there.

Mercury is now in fateful, instinctive, at times obsessive & introspective Scorpio, for just a couple of weeks, with a need for deeper understanding of people and situations. It starts traveling Retrograde from Sunday, causing possible confusion.

Venus remains in idealistic, reticent, curious Virgo, just until Tuesday when it moves into diplomatic, persuasive, plausible, sensual Libra, enabling us to charm people at times. The readings for signs below shows it’s personal influence from Tuesday.

Mars is now in determined, enthusiastic, versatile, but at times defensive Sagittarius, with a need to find ways to appropriately use our energy.

Jupiter is now approximately one third of the way through benevolent, extrovert, positive, expansive Leo, staying there for several months making us benevolent and kind-hearted.

Saturn remains in responsible, shrewd, strong-willed Scorpio, until the end of 2014. It is now traveling Direct, enabling self expansion in some respects.

Uranus remains in assertive, blunt, energetic, self-willed Aries, for several years, and can make us individualistic and rebellious, unexpected events or disruptive emotional matters, may distract us, or help us see things differently. Uranus is currently travelling Retrograde until shortly before Christmas, helping us come up with ingenious ideas, with a need to use them creatively.

Neptune remains in sensitive, intuitive Pisces for the foreseeable future, and helps us gradually develop more empathy, compassion, and build understanding, in a wide variety of ways, but also indicates a need to remain realistic. Neptune is now traveling Retrograde until Mid December, indicating boundaries between reality and illusion may blur at times, causing possible confusion, with a need to look at people and situations realistically.

Pluto remains in Capricorn for quite a few years, so is a very long term influence, showing knowledge gradually acquired on deeper levels, with balance, & realistic ways of recycling & developing our intuitive knowledge further, to use practically.

Seeds for Meditation … Audible Emotions

damsel muse
Have you ever noticed how certain songs are instant hits, loved by the masses; and other songs are complete duds?

The dud may have the same beat, tempo, and subject matter as the hit, but no one likes it. Haven’t you ever wondered what may be happening beneath the perceivable surface?

When you think about songs and what they really are … emotion … A song is an audible emotion!

So, the reason why particular songs appeal to the masses and others don’t is because of the emotion being projected by the musician.

Now, when you have some free time (but don’t put this off too long, else you’ll forget) listen to 4 or 5 songs and pay close attention to how each song makes you feel.

Pick different songs, not just hits.  Maybe there’s a song that you love, but most people don’t.  Notice the emotion that the particular song evokes in you and ask yourself why you can relate more to that song/emotion than others.

Enjoy this exercise!

Seeds For Meditation … Autumn

redmoon_mistress

Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love – that makes life and nature harmonize. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one’s very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a perfect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

HA’AWINA NA UHANE ALOHA ~ Na’aupo (cognitive dissonance)

big story blindWillful ignorance; one who won’t use the tools to discern Truth is na’aupo. It’s all in the hana (the work, daily do-ing). The word itself means “many breaths.”  Keep using the tools until it becomes like breathing automatically; no thinking. No more wasting your Ha (your sacred breath … with too many words of justification/excuse).  Take heart: the more you use them, the easier getting back to Pono (righteousness) is.

  #25         Wu Wang   Disentangling

Above:    Ch’ien       Heaven
Below:    Chen         Thunder

The Wisdom:

Disturbance coming from outside your influence
Be diligent and disentangle yourself and actions
Demonic forces feed on ignorance
Become informed and act swiftly

Look into all your associations and see where you have given up your power to others or have compromised when the benefit would have been to stand firm. This is a partial cause of the disturbance in focus, form and intention. Metaphorically and, in some cases, in reality, you have had difficulty finding a comfortable place or way to sit, stand or sleep. Fidgeting in place for so long has become tiresome and shameful. Your thought processes and actions have been clouded by your desire for a successful outcome. This is futurizing which has led to over-thinking your situation and not living in the present.

By focusing solely on correctness, fame, position, recognition—outcomes of any sort—you are missing the point. It is not that you cannot have all these things—you can, and with attention to movement with and for the greater good, you will. What is problematic is your ego’s projection into the future that will prevent you from tapping into your intuitive clarity and your well-deserved success.

Your call now is to be spontaneous and move with absolute confidence in who you are and what you desire. The beneficial action now is disentangling, releasing, any ties that have bound you to your past influences and to outmoded ways of action and thinking.

The trickster aspect of the ego, would have you look into the future and see the titillating grand and shiny things that represent success. When you think you have figured out the smartest, the most clever and cool ways to move toward your goal this arrogance will lead to a disastrous out come, guaranteed.    The ego will tempt you to move swiftly toward your desires, come hell or high water. It doesn’t work that way.

If you were to continue to move in this manner, you would be disregarding the influence of your spirit helpers who are the bringers of the strength of innocence, and your creative source of the your destined  and created journey. Be cautious not to lose the part of you that is the child of innocence. At this time it will be your saving grace.

Consider the ignored part of your being,
Your inner and sweet child of innocence.
Slow down;
Do not act out of fear
You will scare yourself
Fear will have you looking to the future and trying to plan for every contingency. This would only sap your energy and ultimately prevent you from receiving the love, abundance, and happiness that awaits you.

It is wise to plan and to be thoughtful, but limit your thoughts and plans to the present and in doing so you are making the journey truthful, peaceful, efficient, and more joyful. Your balance along the path is to include being of service to others and to Gaia, our Mother Earth of oceans, deserts, mountains, plains and all her sentient beings. This will allow you to handle whatever surprising events may come your way with a focused clarity that will enable you to act spontaneously and creatively so you will be able to embrace the moment; the magic is in the moment.

In literal translations of the I Ching, this hexagram is defined as “being free of forethought and reflection.” This is good to remember, as it will keep you in the present. Look neither to the past, nor to the future: Be Here Now.

When you are moving toward a goal that will serve the greater good, whether in business, family, community, tribe, relationships, your health,  your journey toward enlightenment, it is important to be clear, dignified and simple while being fully present and in the moment. Live in the moment, this is the only way to become unbound. Walk with like-minded people, fellow pilgrims. Move away from those who suck your energy by raising doubts, fears, or envy.

The ego, the critic, the inner judge, will try to sneak in while you are traveling on your path and tell you that you need to be reasonable, clever, suspicious, and, above all, to look good in others’ eyes. It would have you create imaginary problems that would cause you to incorrectly evaluate the situation before you. The crux of the idea behind this hexagram is to remain aware and fully present.

Consciously let go of trying to get approval from others. This is only the ego trying to interfere and keep you from fully appreciating the beauty and the myriad gifts of life. As you slow down, and allow the inner innocent child to appreciate the beauty all around you, there will emerge a strength that you have not known before. It will be a strength wrought not from pain or angst, but from peace, laughter, and joy.

Take note, by combining your journey with rest and fun in proper measure, you will keep a clear mind that will be ready to handle the good, the bad, and the ugly with equanimity and poise.

The journey is not as treacherous as it might sometimes seem. Listen to your intuition, which will be revealed magically when you respect the importance of rest, meditation and play, in this way you show the ultimate respect and honor to yourself. Be love….be your authentic self.

15 Vegetables You Can Grow In Your Autumn Garden

For me it’s been a tough year to find time for my allotment but on the other hand I’ve been growing loads of greens and herbs at home. Whether you’re a busy person or short of space, growing edibles in containers is an efficient way to garden. Place your pots on a balcony or the patio outside your kitchen door and you can have a steady and convenient supply of salad leaves throughout the summer and autumn. Bring them into a greenhouse or conservatory and you can continue the harvest throughout the cooler months.

Discussion ~ Eating According To Your Genes

atom

Nutritional genomics or Nutrigenomics is a new science studying the relationship between human genome, nutrition and health

97% of the genes known to be associated with human diseases result in monogenic diseases, i.e. a mutation in one gene is sufficient to cause the disease

Modifying the dietary intake can prevent some monogenic diseases

Can eating broccoli prevent cancer? This could actually benefit carriers of the gene like GSTM1, but not others …

Carries of CYP1A2 gene could be at higher risk of a heart attack if they consume a considerable amount of caffeine

Studies have shown that the NAT2 acetylator genotype had a higher risk of developing colon cancer in people who consumed relatively large quantities of red meat

Consider #Coffee : A number of studies offer evidence that drinking java lowers heart-disease risk, most likely as a result of antioxidants and other beneficial compounds in coffee beans. But a few studies show heavy coffee drinkers having a higher than average risk of heart disease—leaving scientists scratching their heads. Nutrigenomics suggests an explanation. In people with the genetic variant that causes sluggish metabolism of caffeine, the stimulant sticks around in the bloodstream longer than usual, where it may disrupt normal heart rhythms and boost blood pressure, overwhelming any benefit. Quick metabolizers, on the other hand, clear the caffeine fast from their bloodstreams but still enjoy the benefits.

Type 2 #Diabetes offers another example. Several studies suggest eating too much #sugar and refined carbohydrates—foods linked with big jumps in blood sugar—can lead to type 2 diabetes. But when researchers look at large groups of subjects, no clear link emerges. The reason may be that only some people are #genetically sensitive to the effects of these foods on blood sugar.

#Cholesterol : Can nutrigenomics explain why some people’s cholesterol levels respond to a healthy diet and others’ don’t? Here, too, there are plenty of clues. Scientists have detected one gene variation that seems to enhance the health benefits of polyunsaturated fats, for example, giving people who possess it a bigger boost in good cholesterol when they eat a diet rich in plant oils. Another appears to make bad-cholesterol levels more likely to soar when people eat a high-fat diet. “Variants in a gene called APOE, which controls cholesterol metabolism, seem to be especially important,” Ordovas told me. People with one genetic pattern see a big drop in cholesterol levels when they switch to a healthier diet. Those with a slightly different pattern get almost no benefit at all.

A study conducted at Stanford University looked at the long-term effects of #weightloss using a few different diets assigned at random. Results showed that some participants lost weight on one type of #diet such as low-fat, while others did not. The study then tested participants’ #DNA for 3 specific gene variations and found that those using the best diet for their DNA lost as much as 2 1/2 times more weight than those not using their best DNA diet.

“It makes sense because our genes control hormone levels, enzyme levels – all the basic levels of #metabolism . And how we metabolize food determines what happens to the nutrients and calories we take in” – ays David Katz, MD, nutrition expert and founder of the Yale Prevention Center

Many common diseases, such as #obesity #cancer #diabetes and #cardiovascular diseases, are #polygenic diseases, i.e. they arise from the dysfunction in a cascade of genes, and not from a single mutated gene. Dietary intervention to prevent the onset of such diseases is a complex and ambitious goal
